Grateful to spend this time with Mom.

Grateful to spend this time with Mom.

One more day with this amazing woman who brought me into this world. I’m so grateful to have such an amazing mom. It’s been a really nice visit this year. Love you, mom! Thank you for making this such a special holiday.

A few years ago we learned that my mom has dementia. The last 4 years have been challenging. We have watched the disease progress. Slowly, my mom is fading away.

This journey has had positive elements, though. Each moment has become really special with my mom. The Universe has really reminded us all that this isn’t going to last forever. We are all just fading away. And it goes pretty fast. You better get present and breathe into every moment because they go by pretty fast.

One of the wonderful things that has happened with my mom as her dementia has progressed is that she has become so much more vulnerable and we have had moments of deep connection that I don’t know we would have had if she didn’t have the disease.

Going through this with my mom has also taught me so much about acceptance and surrender. This is happening. You can’t fight it. It’s happening. You have to accept it and you have to accept the situation exactly as it is. There’s times where initially I wanted my mom to be who she was before the disease - but that’s not show she is now - and that’s not about her - that’s about me.

Our practice now is to love my mom, exactly the way she is and exactly the way she needs to be loved right now. She’s a beautiful and amazing woman and I love her so much.

Hockey Hall of Fame

Hockey Hall of Fame

Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto! Really fun. My first “hall of fame” experience. I forgot how much I love this game. Very nostalgic. Bringing back some wonderful memories. I was such a big fan as a kid!

What are the things that make you feel like a kid? Children are great teachers for us. What makes you feel playful? What makes you feel open and vulnerable? It’s not healthy to live the way many of us spend our adult lives. Think of the things that you could add to your life that lights that spark in you again. What makes you smile from ear to ear? What makes you laugh until it hurts? What are the things you dream about?

The volcano Haleakala! It's been dormant for almost 300 yrs! Wow!

The volcano Haleakala! It’s been dormant for almost 300 yrs. Incredible! I love the girls jumping in their Shiva Yoga shirts. Great shot! Maui has so much to see and explore. And the different parts of the island are so different. I will definitely be going back to explore a little more. Not enough time in just 1 week! And it’s so close — I can’t believe I haven’t been already until now. Beautiful! This incredible planet we live on. Let’s take good care of her and try to leave behind something better than what we found.

Communication is everything!

Communication is everything!

Communication is everything! I think you can solve most problems as long as you are willing to stay open and communicate. It’s hard when there’s a challenge between two people. It’s hard when there’s confrontation. Can you stay open and move towards the confrontation with an open heart and an open mind. This is yoga! If you shut down, close off, stop communicating, and run away — you’re not really practicing yoga off your mat. You have to take what you are learning on your mat off the mat. Go into the fire. Breathe into the discomfort. Stay present. And let go. Let it go. Whatever you are attached to — let it go. I know right away if someone in my life is practicing yoga, or if they are just doing yoga exercise. It’s the quality of communication. My strongest relationships are filled with healthy confrontation. Let’s not push something under the rug and deal with it later. Let’s figure it out right now. Let’s talk about it. Let’s communicate with each other. Are you living your yoga off the mat? What’s your relationship to confrontation? Are you practicing healthy communication? When things get challenging do you shut down? Close off? React emotionally?

What the "pose" in your life right now that is pushing you out of your comfort zone?

What’s the “pose” in your life right now that is making you feel uncomfortable, vulnerable, and is pushing you out of your comfort zone?

The poses in yoga are just tools that help us go into the fire. They are just like people and situations in our life.

Road Rage on the Freeway!

Road Rage on the Freeway!

I was driving to teach a class today and this very aggressive driver behind me was right on my tail.  We were in heavy traffic on the freeway and the traffic was ‘stop and go’.  I watched this driver in my rear view mirror come really close to rear-ending me several times.  I decided to get out of the way and move lanes and let the car go by me.  I pulled into another lane and the car sped past me and then hit the brakes and almost rear ended the next car.  I watched the car for several minutes almost rear end this car several more times as we continued in the ‘stop and go’ traffic.  There was one moment where I was beside this car and I looked over to see what was going on with the driver. There was a middle-aged woman behind the wheel and she was incredibly angry.  She was yelling at the car in front of her.  She suddenly noticed me watching her.  She stopped yelling and glared at me with ‘daggers’ in her eyes.  She then lifted up her arm and gave me the finger and mouthed the words F&%k Yo%!  I thought to myself, “Wow!  This woman's behavior is crazy.”
