If you can control your breath, you can control your mind.

If you can control your breath, you can control your mind.

One of the things I love about teaching with a translator is how it slows everything down.
Slowly moving with the breath is really where it’s at in a flowing practice. If you can control your breath, you can control your mind.
Let the breath lead the movement and let the breath wrap around the movement. The breath starts and then the movement starts. The movement finishes and then the breath finishes. This way there’s always going to be pauses. There’s always going to be control. Who’s driving your car? You are. Enjoy the dance between the movement and the stillness. Holding these opposites at the same time is the paradox that allows us to have a deeper, transformational experience. Concentrate but also surrender.
Practicing a slow flow that is connected to the breath will help you stay calm and keep you out of the default network of your brain - where it will be hard for you to not react and get caught up in everything that is coming up for you and just trying to process. Think of the four parts of the breath. There’s a little moment of stillness where the inhale meets the exhale, and another little moment of stillness where the exhale meets the inhale.
I love flowing with my students! I always practice a little bit with my students in every class. I find it helps me to connect with the group energy. I also think it reminds the students that I’m just walking the path with them. I’m not on a pedestal. I don’t want to be on a pedestal. We are all just walking home together.

Different Pigeon Pose Variations!

Different Pigeon Pose Variations!

Different Pigeon Pose variations! The Pigeon is from the Dove family — a bird symbolizing peace. What happens when your yoga practice deepens? What happens when you experience the true nature of your Self? The yogi’s say your heart opens and love, kindness, compassion, energy, vitality, confidence, and bliss, flow through you. It’s not easy to open your heart. There’s often a lot of resistance, control, and fear, holding you back. Choose love over fear. There’s nothing to be afraid of. The only thing to fear is fear itself. Let yourself be vulnerable. Let things be uncomfortable. The unknown can be exciting and exhilarating! Breathe into it! Feel how good it feels to be alive!

Get off the roller coaster!

Get off the roller coaster!

Get off the roller coaster! Peace of mind doesn’t come from looking out. Happiness in the world is fleeting. Satisfaction is short lived. The yogis know that lasting peace comes from looking within. When you experience your Self in the stillness, when the mind is quiet, then you don’t want to go anywhere or do anything else. You are content, happy, right here, right now. You feel love and compassion for others and a connection to everything and everyone. Get off the roller coaster. Take the journey inward. Find peace.

What is meditation?

What is meditation?

What is meditation?

This was the first question that I asked in my meditation workshop this past weekend.

Most of us have heard the word meditation.  You might have a vague understanding of what meditation involves.  I think most people know that meditation is something to do with sitting in stillness for a long period of time.   In order to develop a deeper understanding of this ancient technology it's important that we understand specifics of the practice.  What is the goal of meditation?  Where are we headed in our practice?  What are the tools that use in our practice?

The Journey is Om!

The Journey is Om!

Yogis! The journey of yoga is the Om! First there is nothing. Heaviness. Stillness. Ignorance. Tamas. Then vibration, movement, activity, leading us into the fire. Rajas. Mmmmmmmmm. Sound. Movement. The roar of Joy! Ooooooooooooooooo! Now we're in it. Into the fire we go! Don't fight it. Don't close off. Don't contract. Surrender. Surrender into the fire! Ooooooooooooooo! Open your heart. Let it flow through you. Feel the expansion. You are in perfect balance. You are embodied consciousness. Move with skill in action. The power of the Universe is moving through you. Oooooooooooooo!!! Surrender. Let go. Go inward. Surrender into the fire. Oooommmmmmmmmmmmm! Stillness. Silence. Listen to the sound of the silence. Peace. Calm. Light. Illumination. Sattva. Stillness but with awareness. Pure consciousness. Who am I? What's my purpose? What's the true nature of the Self? All of the answers. In the stillness. The journey to the other side of the Om. Self realization. The realization of the Self. The experience of the Self. In the stillness what's left? No ego. No mind. No thoughts. No body. No world. Just awareness. The awareness of awareness. Pure awareness. In the stillness are all of your answers. You have to take the journey, though. The journey of the Om. You have to take YOUR journey. No one else can take it for you. You can't use someone else's map to find your destination. You have to go into your OWN fire. You have to create your OWN map. Surrender. Go inward. Find stillness. Listen. And reconnect with your Self. It's not a journey to connect with your Self. You're going home. Oooommmmmmmmmm! You've already been there. There actually is no there. There's nowhere to go. You're already there. You're already HERE. The destination is the journey. The journey is Om!
