Hot and sweaty Shiva Power class this morning!!!

Hot and sweaty Shiva Power class this morning!!!

Hot and sweaty Shiva Power class this morning!!! Great work, everyone!!!
If you are constantly seeking happiness through the senses, you will be on a roller coaster, going up and down, and up and down. The mind is never satisfied. And their will always be more going down on the roller coaster than going up. Even when you get what you want — after a brief moment of happiness, the mind is asking, “what’s next? What’s next? What’s next?”
The yogis understood the mind was constantly falling down and never satisfied. The only way to experience lasting happiness was to turn inward and experience the true nature of the Self.
It’s time to get off the roller coaster!!!

Get on your yoga mat. Concentrate. Stay present. Look at your mind. And let go of the thoughts. Let go of your distractions. Concentrate. Stop getting caught up in the movements of the fluctuating mind. Turn inward. Experience the true nature of the Self.

Standing in Stillness.

Standing in Stillness.

I love this shot with my yoga brother, Richard in Shitang last month for the Zhejiang Yoga Cultural Festival. Richard is so inspiring! He’s been here in China for 20 yrs. He speaks mandarin beautifully. He’s a great yoga teacher and a really good guy too. We went on this adventure one afternoon with the owner of Haipoo Yoga. It was such an interesting day. Lee took us to these incredible caves near where he grew up and we got some beautiful shots. I think this was shot with a drone. I like that it’s simple. Stand in mountain pose in stillness. Think of the qualities of the mountain — big, tall, strong, stable, grounded, and still. Yoga doesn’t have to be a fancy pose. Sit in stillness and concentrate on one thing. Or stand in stillness. This is the hardest practice. The Jain monks used Tadasana as a meditation practice. It’s a really important pose in Jainism. Fun hanging with you, Richard! Namaste.

The Symbol of Hanumanasana

The Symbol of Hanumanasana

A couple of weeks ago I got to do this really fun photo shoot at this incredible location in Shitang, in the mountains, about an hour from Wenling. It was a really fun afternoon. We went to these beautiful caves and I learned that this was where my friend Lee grew up. I loved that he took me here to show me this place. I am enjoying the Chinese culture so much on this trip. My hosts have all been very kind and warm hearted and it’s moved me several times how they treat guests with such honor. I was at dinner the other day and poured tea for the table before filling my own cup. This is a Chinese custom. I didn’t realize I was doing it until the table stopped and looked at me, and then everyone starting laughing. They told me I was becoming more and more Chinese everyday.

I take a lot of pictures in hanumanasana. I love this pose. I love the story of hanuman and the symbol of masculine and feminine coming together. What happens when masculine and feminine energy come together in perfect balance? A new energy is born! The energy of creation! Hanuman is a symbol of perfect balance, a symbol of the awakening of the kundalini force, a symbol of our yoga journey. Study the symbols. Yoga is sometimes described as a code language. You don’t see the signs until you are ready to see the signs. The teacher doesn’t show up in your life until you are ready for the teacher. And you don’t find balance and experience a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you until you are ready for that experience.

A hot and sweaty Shiva Power class at Float Yoga!

A hot and sweaty Shiva Power class at Float Yoga!

A hot and sweaty Shiva Power class at Float Yoga! Thank you, Stella for inviting me to teach at your studio. It was a really humid day and, WOW, did we go into the fire!!! Strong students!!! Great job, everyone. It was fun practicing with all of you. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Sit in the fire and let it cleanse you. Let your stuff come to the surface and let it go. There’s no spiritual by-pass. You have to go through it all to get to the other side. It’s messy. It’s intense. It’s uncomfortable. Sometimes you leave it all on your mat. Sweat, tears, frustration, anger, sadness? What are you working through? What’s coming to the surface for you? Are you looking at your stuff? Are you ready to look in the mirror and see the truth? This is the practice. This is yoga. Fire is the catalyst. You are sharpening your sword. You are cleaning your pot. Transformation isn’t easy. Change isn’t easy. Undoing patterns and working through old stuck energy isn’t easy. But it’s worth it to take the journey! It’s SO worth it. Just get on your mat. Start walking down the path. One step at a time. Namaste.

Shoulder Opening Workshop today at Haipoo Yoga!

Shoulder Opening Workshop today at Haipoo Yoga!

Shoulder Opening Workshop today at Haipoo Yoga!!! We mostly work in our yoga practice on opening the shoulders in Flexion and in Extension. Having a full range of motion at the shoulder joint helps to prevent injuries to the cervical spine and helps release tension in the muscles of the upper back and around the neck. Most of our shoulder opening poses in yoga are backbends. Usually the more advanced backbends take the shoulders into flexion but not always. It’s important to also remember that yoga is not just about flexibility. We are always looking for balance. Too much flexibility can lead to injuries at the joints. Not enough flexibility can lead to injuries in the muscles. This picture is of one of my favorite shoulder opening partner exercises. In this position, you can help your partner take their shoulders deeper into flexion, you can use your hands to help them externally rotate their shoulders, and you can encourage them to find more core and pull their front ribs in making more space and lengthening their spine. When you engage your core while Backbending you lengthen your spine and you actually deepen the pose

Really fun class in Fuzhou yesterday!

Really fun class in Fuzhou yesterday!

Really fun class in Fuzhou yesterday! Great group of students. We did a lot of hip opening and focused on going deep into the fire and staying calm. I talked a lot about getting out of your comfort zone in this class. It’s always so hard when you are a beginner. You don’t have the strength and the ability to focus and the minute things get uncomfortable you are trying to make yourself comfortable, fidgeting your body, and getting distracted. It’s a practice! You will get really good at the things you practice. If you keep practicing concentration, you get really good at concentrating. If you practice letting yourself become distracted, you get really good at distracting yourself. Feed what you want to grow!

Teaching student to wake themselves up!

Teaching student to wake themselves up!

One of the things I learned from my teachers was to teach the students to wake themselves up. I don’t do a lot of hands-on adjustments until I know students really well. Even then — I follow a few simple rules when it comes to adjusting students in class. If I can cue you verbally to find the adjustment yourself I think it’s more powerful than me simply using my knowledge of the pose to put your body in a better position. If verbal cues don’t work, then I’ll try to “mirror” for you what I want you to find in your own body. If that doesn’t work, light touch can be enough. Now, find it on your own. If all else fails or if I think a full hands-on adjustment will really help you deepen your work and you couldn’t get there on your own, then I’ll do the full hands-on adjustment. But the goal is for you to one day not need me around. I think if we do a great job, one day we’ve given our students everything and they don’t need us anymore. In a lot of ways, our job as good teachers, is to one day eliminate ourselves. Is your teacher teaching you to be self sufficient? Are you growing? Are you waking up? Are you waking yourself up? My teacher, Dharma often answers questions by asking a question back — “What do you think? Use your discrimination.” I think the best teacher’s force us to figure things out on our own. Maybe the best thing for you and your growth is to do things incorrectly for a little while and then figure it out on your own?

Shoulder Opening Workshop at Dream Space Yoga.

Shoulder Opening Workshop at Dream Space Yoga.

Learning about the shoulders in my shoulder opening workshop at Dream Space Yoga this past week. Shiva Yoga Intensive. Backbends are the primary poses in our yoga practice that we use to open the shoulders. We are usually focused on opening the shoulders in extension or flexion, in order to increase our range of motion. If we have full range of motion at the shoulder join we can prevent injuries to the neck and upper back. If you want to be able to do more advanced backbends in your yoga practice it is essential that you open your shoulders.

Working with my student on Upward Bow variations.

Working with my student on Upward Bow variations in our Shiva Yoga 40hr Intensive this past week!
The Upward Bow is a really nice backbend to help you open your shoulders in flexion. I’ve been working on this pose a lot in my own practice the past year. The work is really the same work as in the Downward Dog.
Hug the elbows in and push the biceps out. Keep trying to make space around your neck and keep the shoulders wide, as you move the arms deeper into flexion. Slide the shoulder blades down the back. Try to externally rotate the arms, as you push your chest through the arms.

Virabhadrasana. The Hero’s pose.

Virabhadrasana. The Hero’s pose.

Virabhadrasana. The Hero’s pose. Stay calm. Stay grounded. Breathe. Be vulnerable. Open your heart. The strongest people you will ever meet are also the most vulnerable. Courage is not avoiding the fire. Courage is standing in the fire and breathing into the discomfort of the unknown. A hero is strong but not wild and not out of control. Strength isn’t demonstrated by losing your temper, and giving in to your emotions. A bully is not strong but incredibly weak. Strength is demonstrated from restraint. Stand your ground. Find stillness. It is easy to be tossed and turned and pushed around by all of life’s challenges. Stay focused. Stay on your path. Concentrate. The battle is not with anyone else it is with yourself. The battle is between you and your mind. Who is in charge? Who is driving your car? Is it you or the mind? Each time you win this internal battle between you and your mind you increase your will power. Each time you lose this battle with the mind, the distractions, the patterns you are caught up in become stronger and have more power over you. Move through your life like a hero.

Beautiful sunrise this morning on the Blue Star Ferry!

Beautiful sunrise this morning on the Blue Star Ferry!
If you wake up early enough you sometimes get to see the incredible beauty of nature. A new dawn. A new day. We practice yoga first thing in the morning because this is a transformational time. The day moves from darkness to light. Each sunrise is a new beginning, a chance to reinvent yourself, to shift your perspective. This is a great time to set intentions and to head in a new direction. This is also a vata time — a time of intuition and connecting with source. Use your meditation practice to go inward. Let the light move through you. What inspiring thoughts and ideas are bubbling to the surface? What creative forces are moving within you.

Separation exists only in your mind, and because of your ego.

Separation exists only in your mind, and because of your ego.

Hanging out in Bali after a photo shoot with some new friends. Yoga allows each of us to experience our true nature. Who are you at the center of your Self?
You are the experience of awareness experiencing itself. You are not the witness, but the experience of witnessing. You are not the lover, but the experience of loving. You are not compassionate, but the experience of compassion. You are not kind, but the experience of kindness.
Expansive. Beyond time and space. You are everywhere and nowhere. You are pure love. Separation exists only in your mind, and because of your ego.
Imagine, for moment, it’s as if there’s no you and no me. Just for a moment, there’s no separation.
We are travelers on a journey —home, to experience who we really are, underneath all the layers of who we thought we were.

Day 2 at XYoga Festival in Dubai!

Day 2 at XYoga Festival in Dubai!

Incredible Shiva Meditation® class to finish day 2 here at the XYoga Dubai Festival. So grateful to be able to share this practice. 100+ yogis in attendance for a powerful and transformational experience. Thank you for coming, everyone!

When the class finished all the students just sat there, in stillness, with big smiles on their faces. There was a peace and a calm that you could feel radiating from everyone in attendance. I told the students that this is what happens everywhere I teach this class. When the class is over — no one rushes out, there’s no where to go, nothing to do. It happens everywhere. The mind is quiet. Each students has a deeper experience of themselves. Maybe for the first time ever they feel a connection to something beyond the body, mind and thoughts. The mind has stopped saying, “What’s next? What’s next?”

I always feel so happy when I see the students sitting there peacefully after class. It reminds me of taking classes like this with my teacher, Dharma Mittra. We would all sit and Dharma would sometimes say, “Any questions?” There was almost always no questions. This was just like after my class today. I finally told the students what my teacher Dharma always says — “That’s it. It’s over. There’s nothing else.” Then he would laugh and we would all laugh, as we all did today after my class.
