To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
Yoga is the supreme secret of life.
Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart to give yourself to it.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
Don’t grieve for what doesn’t come. Some things that don’t happen keep disasters from happening.
Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.
Keep knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who’s there.
One path leads outward and the other inward. You can walk the way outward that leads to pleasure or the way inward that leads to grace.
Constant practice alone is the secret to success.
Your heart and my heart are very, very old friends.
The only demons in this world are those running around in our hearts, and that is where all our battles ought to be fought.
From joy springs all creation, by joy it is sustained, toward joy it proceeds, and to joy it returns.
The world will be balanced when we are balanced.
We are the mirror as well as the face in it. We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity. We are pain and what cures pain, both. We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.
My heart is so intoxicated with love that I have no wish to speak.
A tree that cannot bend will crack in the wind. Thus by nature’s own decree, the soft and gentle are triumphant.
Obstacles are what you see when you fail to focus on your goals.
One can travel this world and see nothing. To achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you see.
You may call God love, you may call God goodness. But the best name for God is compassion.
The important point of spiritual practice is not to try to escape your life, but to face it-exactly and completely.
Only within our body, with its heart and mind, can bondage and suffering be found, and only here can we find true liberation.
Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.
You can’t make a date with enlightenment.
You are never too old to be what you might have been.
If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.
Opening to oneself fully is opening to the world.
The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility: Humility is endless.
The practice is what you throw yourself into. Unconditionally. The practice is the teacher. Your practice is your teacher.
Even after all this time the sun never says to the earth, ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that. It lights the whole sky.
There always comes a time when one must choose between contemplation and action.
Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralyzed.
Don’t chase after thoughts, and don’t push them away. Just let them come in and go out like a swinging door.
The great tragedy of life is not that people set their sights too high and fail to achieve their goals but that they set their sights too low and do.
There is only one great adventure and that is inwards toward the self.
Only silence is the supreme speech, only illumination the universal response.
When a man makes up a story for his child, he becomes a father and a child together, listening.
All the harm, fear, and suffering in the world are caused by attachment to the self: Why should I hold on to this great demon?
We learn something by doing it. There is no other way.
Learning to live is learning to let go.
When the ocean surges don’t let me just hear it. Let it splash inside my chest.
It is as hard to see one’s Self as to look backwards without turning around.
Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth.
If we really want to love we must learn how to forgive.
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
Extremes are easy. Strive for balance.
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.
Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.
Gamble everything for love if you are a true human being.
