Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

How open is your heart? How much love is flowing through you? Yoga philosophy teaches us that when we quiet the movements of the mind, and experience the deepest part of our Self — love, kindness, and compassion will flow through us and into the world. What kind of love is your love? Is it this love, kindness, and compassion, flowing through you to all those around you?
My teacher Dharma would say reverse engineer it. Maybe you’ve never experienced Samadhi, or you haven’t gone deep enough to experience your inner Light yet. Pretend you are already there. Practice being loving, kind, and compassionate. Be of service in the world to those around you. So much love for everyone who has touched my path. Grateful for each of you! Hope you have a wonderful day today and are letting your inner Light shine through and light up those around you. When the Light is flowing through you, you don’t need one special person, everyone is special, and everyone deserving of love. Namaste.

Each of the students becomes my teacher too.

Each of the students becomes my teacher too.

Grateful for each of these students! I learn so much leading these Teacher Training programs. Each of the students becomes my teacher too. And we all grow together. It’s a wonderful connection. The teacher/student relationship is such a beautiful thing. I’ve been blessed with some incredible teachers in my life who have helped me learn about myself. I try to copy them and hold the space for my students and help them learn about themselves. We keep passing it on and we keep helping each other along. Nobody gets there on their own. There’s always so much help along the way. Gratitude.  Namaste.

What is a Guru? What does 'namaste' mean?

What is a Guru? What does 'namaste' mean?

Every morning for the past 4 weeks I’ve started teaching my classes with a long Dharma talk before each class. This is definitely one of my favorite parts of leading these Shiva Yoga® 200hr Teacher Training programs. We have extra time and I can take the time to share some of the stories that my teachers have shared with me that have helped me understand yoga, and break down and talk about some of the common terms we use a lot in yoga but may not fully understand.

Breathe into it

Breathe into it

Really fun class this morning at Westlake Village Equinox!  Change your relationship to your Self and your relationship to everything else changes.  This is why yoga has such a profound impact on your life.  Your yoga mat is the microcosm.  What if instead of fighting with the pose you breathed into it?  What if instead of fighting through your life you breathed into it?  It was good to see you this morning, everyone!  Namaste.

The Light In Me Recognizes The Light In You

The Light In Me Recognizes The Light In You

I'm staying in this Airbnb apartment, here, in Shanghai.  There is this sweet, little, old lady, who lives in the building.  Her daughter, or granddaughter, has been taking her out for a walk each day, and I've been running into them. They both give me such a nice smile when they see me.  When I practice my limited Chinese, and say things like, "Nihao" (hello), the old lady lights up, and grins from ear to ear.  These little moments of connection have really made each day so special.  So simple to just have an open heart and smile at a stranger and say hello.  Each day, when I leave from these exchanges I am grinning from ear to ear too.  The three of us have had a beautiful moment of connection.  It's the "namaste" connection.  The light in me recognizes the light in you, and it's the same.  Life is so beautiful.  So many incredible and meaningful moments. Grateful for each one!  Namaste.

Breathe Into This Moment!

Breathe Into This Moment!

Good morning!  It's a beautiful day.  So grateful for this day.  So grateful for this moment.  I offer my heart up and I bow down to say thank you.  How are you going to spend your day today? What incredible things are you going to see and experience?  Breathe into this moment.  Live it fully and then let it go and move on.  It's when we are not really living that we have trouble letting things go.  It's when you aren't breathing into your moments that you find yourself caught up in your head, longing for something that has passed, and anxious about a future that has yet to come.  The past and the future only exist in your mind.  There is only right here and right now. This moment.  Be here now.  This is it.  This is your life.  Right now.  Have a beautiful day! Namaste.

Feeling Grateful! Another Beautiful Year!

Feeling Grateful! Another Beautiful Year!

Thanks for all the birthday love, everyone! It's been a beautiful day. This has been a great year and I have much to be grateful for in my life. There are always challenges in all of our lives. I think it is how we meet those challenges that matters. I look forward to the year ahead. I'm ready for whatever challenges come my way and I'm exciting for the opportunity for growth which each one will bring. I'm grateful for all of the wonderful people who I have crossed paths with on this journey so far. Grateful for my family, my teachers, my friends and my students. Thank you for being a part of my life. My wish for my birthday this year is for all of us to practice more kindness and compassion and love towards each other and to remember that we are more alike than different. There are things that I hope to manifest this year but I'm learning to let go of my attachment to them too. If the door is closed to me then maybe that's not the room I'm supposed to enter. I hope this year I am able to go with the flow a little more, ride the wave and let go a little more. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next. I hope to see you soon and I hope we get to make some beautiful memories together this year. Namaste!

Namaste!

Namaste!

The sun is the lightest and brightest thing in our world.  One of the things we are working to do in yoga is to become lighter and brighter.  The ego and mind are constantly pulling us down.  It takes hard work to move out of the tamasic state of heaviness and sluggishness.  We must lift ourselves up and elevate ourselves, shifting our perspective away from the ego and the mind, attachment and aversion, and connecting with the part of ourselves that is pure consciousness, pure awareness.  That same pure awareness, that same pure consciousness, that same light that is in you is also in me.  That same light that is in us is in everyone.

Namaste!

Namaste!

Namaste, Yogis!

We were talking in class today about some common yoga terminology, words we use in yoga and what they mean.

What does "namaste" mean?

This is a traditional greeting.  It's often done with the hands at the heart in Anjali Mudra (a prayer like position), sometimes referred to as pranamasana, and a slight bow of the head.  The physicalty isn't necessary, though.  Sometimes you might just say, "namaste".  You could also do the physicality without saying the actual words and it would still mean the same thing.  I often touch my heart when I see a student and often they will do the same in return. Sort of the short form version of this greeting.
