I’m off to the Yonion Festival! Excited to be teaching at this festival in Xiamen for the first time. This is one of China’s largest yoga festivals. I’m honored to be presenting with some of the world’s leading international teachers, including my friends @tymihoward @diceyoga and @yogawithbriohny I’m in Brussels now. Waiting on my flight to Beijing. Where is your journey taking you next? If you show up with an open mind and an open heart the possibilities are endless. Enjoy the ride and breathe into every moment. The thought of all the travel I’m doing this year and being away from home for so long - several months on this current trip - made me very nervous at first and definitely took me out of my comfort zone. I’m loving being challenged like this, though and being forced to give up control. It’s such a beautiful practice. Let it go. What are you holding on to? Let it go. Trust. Have faith. The Universe has a plan for you. Just keep taking steps forward. Breathe. It’s not supposed to feel comfortable. Are you really nervous? Or are you excited and you’ve forgotten how amazing it feels to be excited, vulnerable and alive! Namaste, my friends. Thank you to all of you who I’ve met so far on this path who have inspired me to get out of my comfort zone. We are walking this path together.Read More
Communication is everything! I think you can solve most problems as long as you are willing to stay open and communicate. It’s hard when there’s a challenge between two people. It’s hard when there’s confrontation. Can you stay open and move towards the confrontation with an open heart and an open mind. This is yoga! If you shut down, close off, stop communicating, and run away — you’re not really practicing yoga off your mat. You have to take what you are learning on your mat off the mat. Go into the fire. Breathe into the discomfort. Stay present. And let go. Let it go. Whatever you are attached to — let it go. I know right away if someone in my life is practicing yoga, or if they are just doing yoga exercise. It’s the quality of communication. My strongest relationships are filled with healthy confrontation. Let’s not push something under the rug and deal with it later. Let’s figure it out right now. Let’s talk about it. Let’s communicate with each other. Are you living your yoga off the mat? What’s your relationship to confrontation? Are you practicing healthy communication? When things get challenging do you shut down? Close off? React emotionally?Read More
We hold space as yoga teachers. We create a space where it’s okay to be vulnerable and to push out of your comfort zone. We offer encouragement and support. We push you hard when you need it and we remind you to back off when you are pushing too hard. We help you stand your ground in the middle of the fire and breathe. We teach you to welcome the discomfort. We teach you to get out of your comfort zone.Read More
We started our Shiva Yoga 200hr Teacher Training this week at Baja Soul Yoga in Cabo San Lucas! We are off to a great start. This is a really nice group of trainees and future teachers. Here’s some highlights from our first day together. Our first class on Wednesday morning was a big hip opening Shiva Power class. It’s hot here in Cabo and this was a hot and sweaty morning. I had fun practicing with this group and taking them into the fire. Lots of fun variations and peak poses. I gave a Dharma talk about yoga practice to begin our class. What is yoga practice? There’s a big difference between practicing yoga and doing yoga as an exercise. You can practice yoga on and off your mat and you can not practice yoga on and off your mat too. If you want to make use of this technology? If you want to practice yoga? — concentrate, let things get uncomfortable, hold your focus, and don’t distract yourself; stay present, look at the mind, look at your distractions, look at your habits, study yourself, what is being revealed; and let go, surrender, whatever comes up for you, let it go. This is yoga practice. Over and over. Every pose. Every moment. Use the technology. Concentrate, stay present, and surrender. Quiet your mind, and in stillness experience a deeper connection to your Self. This is yoga! We are off to a great start, Yogis! Excited to spend this month with you. Namaste.Read More
What’s the “pose” in your life right now that is making you feel uncomfortable, vulnerable, and is pushing you out of your comfort zone?
The poses in yoga are just tools that help us go into the fire. They are just like people and situations in our life.
Look at the judgment, criticism, and endless commentary as you move through your practice. The Ego behaves as if everyone asked us for our opinion on everything – but in reality, nobody asked us for our opinion on anything. Whether we verbalize the commentary or not – we have to listen to it. You’re either present or you’re not. You’re either in this moment or you’re not. And if you’re caught up in your head, judging the moment that just passed, you’re not really in this moment.Read More
One of the things I talked about a lot on our retreat to Bali was the difference between practicing yoga and just doing yoga exercise.
A new student in class yesterday, in Woodland Hills, said to me after class that she finally understood yoga for the first time. She used to think it was boring but after being encouraged to practice yoga and focus on quieting the mind, she said to me, “It’s really not boring at all is it? It’s just not about getting all sweaty and raising your heart rate. There’s a lot more going on here. I wish I could record your voice.” You know you need to get to the intensity. You know you need to get to the discomfort. How quickly can you get past the fear and resistance and go into the fire? The mind and the ego tell you to run away, avoid it, distract yourself, whatever you do, don’t go into the fire! It’s uncomfortable. It’s going to be hard. It’s not going to feel good.
The journey is into the fire, and through the fire.
Yoga is not about rainbows and unicorns! It's supposed to be challenging. It involves looking at darkness and the darker parts of ourselves on our journey towards the light. You can't by-pass this work. This work is your yoga practice!
Take your journey into the fire and look at yourself. It's going to get hot. It's going to get uncomfortable. It's supposed to be uncomfortable!Read More
There is no growth without discomfort. There is no healing without pain. Go into the fire. Go towards the heat, the discomfort, the pain. That's how you're going to heal yourself. Yoga is not about avoiding things. Stop distracting yourself. Sit with your suffering. Breathe into it. Heal yourself. Take the journey. It's all about the journey. And if the journey is leading you anywhere but inward and closer to your Self then you aren't really on the journey at all. What's this journey all about? Learning to love. Learning to love every moment. Learning to accept yourself right here and right now. This moment is all there is. Imagine there is no future and no past. There is only right here and right now. Can you open up more in this moment? Can you expand more in this moment? What are you waiting for? Contract and you get ego. Expand and you become pure consciousness. How much could you open up right now? How much could you expand? How incredible is this moment right here and now? Are you loving it all? Are you breathing it all in? This is your life. Don't take even one second of it for granted. And stop running away from your pain. Stop! Right now. Back yourself. Show up for yourself. Now is the time! Go into the fire!Read More
