There’s an incredible energy here in Dubai at the XYoga Dubai Festival! Perfect weather for our first day. A really wonderful group came out for my first Shiva Power® class and I enjoyed sharing some free time with the other teachers who have come from all over the world. It’s been a pleasure meeting and hanging with Janet Stone and Deepika Mehta. I have to say it’s been a pretty powerful experience so far. Thank you XYoga Dubai for bringing together all of us and putting on this wonderful event!Read More
Hip Opening workshop yesterday at Guruv Yoga Dr. Phillips in Orlando!
The students in this picture are working on putting poses into families of similar poses.
Yoga philosophy tells us there are as many poses and pose variations as there are people. Some texts describe the potential for 8,400,000 different asanas. We also learn from the ancient yogis that there are archetypal poses — and really only a handful of “categories” of poses or pose families.
When you break down the asanas and look at the anatomy it becomes easy to see there are only so many ways to move each joint. That really limits the number of actual poses that are really different than other poses.
Fun workshop yesterday!
Please join me today at 1-4pm for an Arm Balancing workshop! Exciting to build on what we covered today.Read More
I had so much fun teaching anatomy yesterday afternoon at Guruv Yoga in Orlando! Thank you Tymi Howard for inviting me to be a part of your teacher training program. Great group of students! Really open and receptive and hungry for knowledge. Going to be some great teachers coming out of this program. I’m back with the trainees on Thursday (tomorrow) for more anatomy and applied anatomy. Lots of asana breakdown. I love breaking down the poses so we can better understand what’s going on in the body in each pose. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow everyone! Have a great day with Tymi today. I’m leading an open Vinyasa class at 9:30 tomorrow too. Please join me if you are free. You don’t have to be in the training program to come to the class. Look forward to practicing with you.Read More
We finished our week at Kula Yoga last night with a Handstand workshop! These Handstanders worked their butts off. Lots of Asana Breakdown, to better understand the work needed to find balance in the middle of the room. Lots of playful exercises to emphasize different muscles in the body and wake up areas that needed waking up. Lots of work on the core and the shoulders.
Handstands are advanced arm balances. They are great warm up poses for advanced students. They build strength in the shoulder stabilizer muscles and the core. They help students build confidence. And they are a lot of fun!
I had fun practicing with all of you last night. Next time I come back we are going to do the plank competition too! Lol.Read More
A fun picture from our hip opening workshop on Saturday. Guruv Yoga in Orlando — I’m coming to teach all this week and we have a Hip Opening Workshop scheduled from 1-4 on Saturday, January 26th! Hope you can join me for the workshop. Let’s explore the hips together. This is a fun all levels workshop with lots of knowledge shared as well as time to practice and explore how things feel in your own body.Read More
We had a big hip opening workshop on Saturday at Kula Yoga in Port Orange. Thank you everyone for coming out to explore with me. I really enjoyed practicing with you and sharing some knowledge about how we can work with this area of the body.
Full range of motion in the hips will help protect the low back, the knees, create more balance in the body, and prepare the body to sit comfortably in seated meditation postures for pranayama or meditation practices.
We touched on a lot of additional things in this workshop too — from sequencing, to anatomy, to deeper philosophy and then tying these things all together. I love how each of these workshops goes in different directions depending on who is in the room and what they want to learn and focus on. This was a very open and receptive group and we got to cover a lot. Grateful to all of you for coming!
This coming Saturday, January 26th, I’m leading another Hip Opening workshop in Orlando at Guruv Yoga. If you missed this week at Kula Yoga and you are in the Orlando area please join me there!Read More
Breathing and Pranayama Workshop last night at Kula Yoga in Port Orange! What a fun workshop, exploring — breathing, anatomy, yoga philosophy, and pranayama, with such an open and receptive group. I learn so much from everyone everytime I lead one of these workshops and I love going over the material again and again, and deepening my own practice knowledge.
Grateful to these students for bringing so much of their own knowledge and exploring with me. Thank you for letting me share these teachings with you. I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I did. Namaste.Read More
Hip Opening Workshop and Shoulder Opening Workshop, on our retreat this past week in Maui! We had the perfect balance of beautiful sunny days which allowed for lots of adventure and time to explore the island, and rainy, windy days where it felt great to be inside the yoga shala learning new things an deepening our practice. It was really fun to explore some deeper work on the retreat, as we might in one of my Shiva Yoga Teacher Training programs. We covered a lot in these workshops! From basic anatomy and asana breakdown, to sequencing, and understanding how yoga philosophy informs our yoga practice. Do you know the difference between the warm up and the deeper practices? My teacher’s would say that a lot of modern yoga is missing the bigger picture and the key elements that will allow you to experience a deeper connection to your Self, and really receive the full benefits of this incredible yoga technology. Make sure you are not just warming up to go home. 😂🤷♂️ Great work, Yogis! You were so focused in these workshops — we got to cover a lot in a very short period of time. 😁🙏👍Read More
This has to be one of the best ‘feel good’ partner yoga poses! And it feels good for both partners too. If you are on the body in the Seated Forward Fold your partner helps you to fold deeper into flexion. If you are on top in the Upward Bow Pose variation your partner helps you lengthen your spine, open the mid and upper back, and take the shoulders deeper into flexion. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!Read More
The Sun Salutations are a big part of yoga. The Sun is another symbol of our inner Light. We connect the idea of the lightest and brightest thing in our world with the lightest and brightest (and most subtle) aspect of who we are.Read More
