Something in the water...

Something in the water...

There’s something in this Dubai water. Feels like I’m just floating and light as a feather! Thanks for the fun play session! Lol.

I posted this picture on social media and some people wondered if it was real. We had so much fun playing and creating this and other pics. The XYoga Dubai Festival had this booth set up with everything rotated 90 degrees, so you could do these really crazy and wild looking asana variations. You were lying down but when you take a picture and rotate the pic 90 degrees it looks like you are defying gravity. Pretty cool!

Either that, or maybe I have more siddhi powers than I often share. Lol.

Hip Opening Workshop with the Guruv Yoga trainees!

Hip Opening Workshop with the Guruv Yoga trainees!

Hip Opening workshop yesterday at Guruv Yoga Dr. Phillips in Orlando!

The students in this picture are working on putting poses into families of similar poses.

Yoga philosophy tells us there are as many poses and pose variations as there are people. Some texts describe the potential for 8,400,000 different asanas. We also learn from the ancient yogis that there are archetypal poses — and really only a handful of “categories” of poses or pose families.

When you break down the asanas and look at the anatomy it becomes easy to see there are only so many ways to move each joint. That really limits the number of actual poses that are really different than other poses.

Fun workshop yesterday!

Please join me today at 1-4pm for an Arm Balancing workshop! Exciting to build on what we covered today.

Demonstrating Kukkutasana.

Demonstrating Kukkutasana in my Arm Balancing workshop yesterday at Guruv Yoga Dr. Phillips in Orlando! This is a challenging pose for me. I’ve been working with a shoulder injury the last two months and this was the first time in this pose in a while. I had a lot of fun playing with the students yesterday in our workshop. It was definitely a hot and sweaty one with lots of focus on the core, shoulders and the arms. A strong group came out and we were able to work on some challenging poses and advanced transitions. It was great to practice with you, everyone! You all did a great job! Look forward to seeing you again soon!

Anatomy Breakdown at Guruv Yoga.

I had so much fun teaching anatomy yesterday afternoon at Guruv Yoga in Orlando! Thank you Tymi Howard for inviting me to be a part of your teacher training program. Great group of students! Really open and receptive and hungry for knowledge. Going to be some great teachers coming out of this program. I’m back with the trainees on Thursday (tomorrow) for more anatomy and applied anatomy. Lots of asana breakdown. I love breaking down the poses so we can better understand what’s going on in the body in each pose. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow everyone! Have a great day with Tymi today.  I’m leading an open Vinyasa class at 9:30 tomorrow too. Please join me if you are free. You don’t have to be in the training program to come to the class. Look forward to practicing with you.

Finishing last week at Port Orange with Handstand Workshop

Finishing last week at Port Orange with Handstand Workshop

We finished our week at Kula Yoga last night with a Handstand workshop! These Handstanders worked their butts off. Lots of Asana Breakdown, to better understand the work needed to find balance in the middle of the room. Lots of playful exercises to emphasize different muscles in the body and wake up areas that needed waking up. Lots of work on the core and the shoulders.

Handstands are advanced arm balances. They are great warm up poses for advanced students. They build strength in the shoulder stabilizer muscles and the core. They help students build confidence. And they are a lot of fun!

I had fun practicing with all of you last night. Next time I come back we are going to do the plank competition too!  Lol.

Powerful Hip Opening Workshop!

Powerful Hip Opening Workshop!

We had a big hip opening workshop on Saturday at Kula Yoga in Port Orange. Thank you everyone for coming out to explore with me. I really enjoyed practicing with you and sharing some knowledge about how we can work with this area of the body.

Full range of motion in the hips will help protect the low back, the knees, create more balance in the body, and prepare the body to sit comfortably in seated meditation postures for pranayama or meditation practices.

We touched on a lot of additional things in this workshop too — from sequencing, to anatomy, to deeper philosophy and then tying these things all together. I love how each of these workshops goes in different directions depending on who is in the room and what they want to learn and focus on. This was a very open and receptive group and we got to cover a lot. Grateful to all of you for coming!

This coming Saturday, January 26th, I’m leading another Hip Opening workshop in Orlando at Guruv Yoga. If you missed this week at Kula Yoga and you are in the Orlando area please join me there!

Breathing and Pranayama Workshop last night at Kula Yoga in Port Orange! What a fun workshop, exploring — breathing, anatomy, yoga philosophy, and pranayama, with such an open and receptive group. I learn so much from everyone everytime I lead one of these workshops and I love going over the material again and again, and deepening my own practice knowledge.

Grateful to these students for bringing so much of their own knowledge and exploring with me. Thank you for letting me share these teachings with you. I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I did.  Namaste.

Shiva Meditation Class at Kula Yoga.

Shiva Meditation Class at Kula Yoga.

Shiva Meditation class this morning at Kula Yoga in Port Orange! Powerful way to start the day.

Pranayama, yoga nidra, and seated meditation.

What is yoga?

The stopping of the movements of the mind. When the mind is quiet, in the stillness, you get to experience the true nature of your Self.

What’s left over in the stillness when for a moment the body, mind, thoughts and ego have disappeared?

You!

Our next Shiva Meditation class is tomorrow night at 5:30pm at Kula Yoga In Port Orange. Last one of the week! Hope to see you there.

Deepening Backbends.

Deepening Backbends.

Lots of twisting in our warm up last night led us into some deep backbends.

My teacher, Dharma, always says, “3 is the bare minimum, 7 is better, and 10 is the best.” I usually shoot for 10 rounds of backbending in my own practice, and somewhere between 7-10 rounds of backbends in my classes.

The backbends are energizing! They lift us up! They help us to concentrate! And they also teach us to surrender. All of the intensity in the backbends brings your stuff to the surface — and then you get to practice letting it go.

We held a backbend pose recently with Dharma — when I was practicing with him in New York, for almost 40 breaths. At first, I kept fighting and pushing and resisting — but, finally, I just let go. I was still breathing, still in the pose, but not resisting — and something opened up for me. It took that really long hold for me to work through all that stuff that was coming up, all the fear and resistance and fighting. Sometimes you just have to hold the poses longer than you want to.

I love working with students on the full bow pose with the mama Kuka straps. Great work last night and this morning everyone! Thank you for your practice. Hard to make the transition to the full bow — but if you use the different length straps it’s not such a big jump. Over time you can get there. Slowly, one step at a time — and all is coming.

The yogi's say there are an unlimited number of poses and variations.

The yogi's say there are an unlimited number of poses and variations.

The yogi’s say there are an unlimited number of poses and variations. They also teach us that there are several, original, essential, archetypal poses. And from these poses we can see different categories of poses, or families of poses. There’s only so many ways we can anatomically move the body. There’s three areas of the body which provide most of the movement and which we primarily focus on in yoga asana practice — the Thoraco-lumbar spine, the hips, and the shoulders.

Hip Opening Workshop and Shoulder Opening Workshop, on our retreat this past week in Maui!

Hip Opening Workshop and Shoulder Opening Workshop, on our retreat this past week in Maui!

Hip Opening Workshop and Shoulder Opening Workshop, on our retreat this past week in Maui! We had the perfect balance of beautiful sunny days which allowed for lots of adventure and time to explore the island, and rainy, windy days where it felt great to be inside the yoga shala learning new things an deepening our practice. It was really fun to explore some deeper work on the retreat, as we might in one of my Shiva Yoga Teacher Training programs. We covered a lot in these workshops! From basic anatomy and asana breakdown, to sequencing, and understanding how yoga philosophy informs our yoga practice. Do you know the difference between the warm up and the deeper practices? My teacher’s would say that a lot of modern yoga is missing the bigger picture and the key elements that will allow you to experience a deeper connection to your Self, and really receive the full benefits of this incredible yoga technology. Make sure you are not just warming up to go home. 😂🤷‍♂️ Great work, Yogis! You were so focused in these workshops — we got to cover a lot in a very short period of time. 😁🙏👍

Stand Up Paddle + Yoga!

Stand Up Paddle + Yoga!

We attempted to do a little yoga on the Stand Up Paddle boards. I have so much respect for the yogis who do this regularly and make it look so easy. It was really hard!!! Lol. What a fun day! Such a great group on this retreat. Almost everyone on the retreat was returning after having already done a previous retreat adventure with me and it was kind of like a reunion for a lot of us. So nice to see everyone and share another adventure together. Where are headed next?  Possibly Iceland, Croatia, Thailand, Alaska, or India. Stay tuned! Lots of fun adventures on the horizon! Don’t forget about the Elysia Yoga Convention next year in Greece too!
